Description
Chinese Cloisonne Foo Dogs on Rosewood Bases. These 2 highly ornamental Foo Dogs are each stamped "Silver" on the bottom. 3.5" tall and 4" Long. Intricately constructed and hand embellished. Weight combined 1 Pd 5 oz. In China, where foo dogs originated, they are called shi, meaning lion, or shishi, meaning stone lion. They do share a resemblance with the Chow Chow and Shih Tzu, which led these figures to be called foo dogs (or fu dogs) in English, although you may also see them referred to as Chinese guardian lions, guardian dogs or stone temple dogs. PROVENANCE: A private collection, Manchester, England - Charleston, SC.
