Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador border, Narino or Puruha culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. An egg-shaped vessel with an anthropomorphic form on one side. Much of the body is covered with a delightful black-on-red painted pattern in two registers, created using the negative resist technique. The lower is larger, with pyramid-like triangular patterns decorated with interior spirals. The upper is a repeated wave pattern. Around the rim is a face with large ears that tilt slightly backward and serve as handles. The eyes are coffee-bean-shaped, with narrow slits that mirror the form of the mouth, which is slightly offset from the rest of the face. The nose is remarkably naturalistic, complete with nostrils. Size: 4.7" W x 5.75" H (11.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
