Item Details
Description
Lithograph in colors on paper by artist Helen O'Gorman titled Thevetia Thevetioides. (Ammex Associados 1961), C. 1961, fasimile signed on bottom right color and titled on bottom left. An auction house certificate of authenticity is included; guaranteed as described. This book is a selection from the fifteen year study Mrs. Helen O'Gorman has made of native flowering plants of Mexico. No complete picture of Mexican flora could be presented in one volume: the rich and varied material could fill a library. An attempt is made here to present the most noticeable flowering plants one sees along the main highways and in places of interest in Mexico. Some unusual cultivated plants are included because of their importance in the Mexican scene and their place of origin is given, but for the most part the plants are native to Mexico. Only the trees most noticeable for their flowers are chosen and a very limited number of the Cactaceae, although they constitute one of the largest and most interesting groups of Mexican plants, more profusely developed in Mexico than in any other part of the world, conspicuous in the landscape and of great economic importance. The many species of epiphytic orchids constitute another more specialized study which is worthy of a separate book. In 1953 the Mexican government honored her with an exhibition of these flower paintings at the National Palace of Fine Arts. Diego Rivera, the well known Mexican painter, said about these in the catalogue for this exhibition: "The beautiful and admirable drawings with fine color that Helen O'Gorman has made of the flowers of Mexico, clean and pure, humble and strong in their great delicacy, sensitive and full of emotion and of profound tenderness are a high tribute to the great talent of an excellent artist of Mexico and there will be no Mexican that will not feel emotion from this work--so devotedly drawn and painted are the Flowers of Mexico that they conserve in paint and transmit to us with her feeling for form, color and texture, all their fragrance--and not only is art and love and beauty present; that which she offers to Mexico and the world is great material for science and investigations of immeasurable value.Helen Lamphere O'Gorman, 80, artist renowned for depictions of Mexican flowers. ... Mrs. O'Gorman also a botanist and author, was honored in June 1953, when she became the first American woman to exhibit her work in the Palaclo Bellas Artes, Mexico's national museum of fine art.
