Description
High bell shaped ancient porcelain blue and white bowl from the downed cargo of a Vietnamese sunken ship (The Hoi An Hoard).
High walled, high footed porcelain bowl from the 14th century that has expert, professional painting of floral scrolling, with lappet designs. The central well has a design of floral branches with a cross hatch band around the inside mouth. The glaze is smooth, soft feeling with a nice shiny appearance. The white glaze has a blueish cast with crackling. The cobalt used is a deep black blue. The foot ring is unglazed as is the base. The base has a dark wash painted on.
There is a paper sticker on the base with the words SAGA. HOI AN HOARD . VISAL and the number 139564 and a picture of a dragon.
MEASUREMENTS 5 7/8†(14.9 cm) diameter x 3 9/16†tall. Weighs 15.4 oz (440 g)
CONDITION The bowl is in good shape for being on the ocean floor. The glaze looks untouched. There is one rim chip. There are no cracks, or breaks. The bowl looks like it was made yesterday.
I love the shape of these early bowls from Vietnam. This bowl is a time capsule to an ancient time 700 years ago.
