Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A mold-made buff redware flask, pierced at either shoulder to allow it to be worn around the neck as a protective souvenir. On both sides is a motif of a cross with branching arms. A small spout rises above the body, between the two holes. Made to hold Holy Water or blessed oil, probably made to be sold at a pilgrimage site. Size: 1.95" W x 2.6" H (5 cm x 6.6 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
