Original hand color. Copperplate engraved.One of the most famous and iconic world maps. From the world's first modern atlas. German edition. By Ortelius, one of the most well known map makers in history. Published in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which was first published in 1570 in Antwerp. This was the most expensive book ever published on any subject up to this date. It was a major success. Based on his friend Mercator's celebrated and influential world map of 1569. Ortelius credits him among others, the first time such source siting was ever done in map production. The massive southern continent is shown based on myth and conjecture. The North American continent is shown larger and more westward at this point in map making. In the oceans can be seen sea monsters, a ship and a flying fish. 3850 copies were produced between 1587-1612. There are an estimated 395 of these atlases still intact. There are an estimated 556 loose examples known. 14.4% survival rate.
