Description
Anthony Quinn (Anthony Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca), Mexican-American, 1915-2001, California, Massachusetts, Africa, Mexico. Expressive figurative sculpture, portraiture, painting.
"Untitled (White Tilted Head)" is a marble sculpture that has the incised signature in front near the bottom of the marble. H 26 x W 13 x D 12 in.
Anthony Quinn was an Oscar winning actor that spent time between on location takes sculpting and painting. His sculptures created in the 1970s and 80s while acting in Africa are considered his strongest works. Quinn was taught architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, who encouraged him to also pursue acting. Quinn received few courses in formal art training, instead relying upon books, museum visits, and personal art collecting. His work was first exhibited in the early 1980s in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Mexico City. This sculpture depicts an abstracted head interconnected with rounded bands that could represent flowing hair or a head covering. Considered vertically as a whole, the artwork forms a near-ovoid shape. There are excellent negative spaces between forms. The face is condensed into a profile view as it lies nearly flat. The sculpture offers great variety in overall form when one moves around the piece.
