Andy Warhol was instrumental in popularizing screenprinting. He is best known for founding Pop Art and for his prints that elevated popular culture objects and famous figures into high art. After studying at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and before Warhol moved to silkscreen, he was an illustrator. It was his illustrations which inspired his paintings on comic strip characters. While illustrating in the 1950s, Warhol took a familiar animal and created a large lithographic series of cats. The felines often took on one untraditional color, which in this instance is the color blue. The kittens sit with arms folded and stand, both looking to the viewer. Their charm is further heightened by the heart-shaped collars. Warhol was fascinated with uniformity and repetition, and with creating images in series. This print belongs to the series that was created just before or just after Warhol was reaching great success and fame in New York.
