Description
Greece, Thessaly, Aenianes, ca. mid 4th century BCE. AR hemidrachm (2.4 g). Obverse: Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to right. Reverse: AINIANWN, the hero Phemios, naked but for a belt holding a short sword in a scabbard, chlamys over shoulders and left arm, standing left, head right, hurling a javelin and holding his petasos as a small shield. Scarce! BMC 7.1. Size: .55" W (1.4 cm)
This coin comes from an exciting time in the history of Thessaly. During the 4th century, the province transformed into a major military power within Greece under Jason of Pherae. Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, became Thessaly's Archon and it was associated with the dynamic Macedonian Kingdom for the next few centuries.
