North America, Native American, ca. early 20th century CE. Many strands of tiny glass seed beads, highly prized for their brilliant colors. A fabulous ensemble! Size: longer strands measure ~ 33" L (83.8 cm)
Beads were among the earliest goods that Europeans traded with Native Americans. By the mid-16th century, Spaniards were trading beads into New Mexico. In time all beads came from trading posts; however, Indians spread trade beads extensively through their networks until they could be found in the most remote parts of the United States. Used to decorate various articles - moccasins, arm bands, belts, bandoliers, headbands, belts, jewelry, etc. beadwork came to symbolize the Native Americans' rich heritage.
