Description
Joshua Archer flourished from about 1841-1865. His maps were printed from engraved steel plates. Archer's early work is often overlooked as he is perhaps best recognized for work published in in the Curiosities of Great Britain by Thomas Dugdale in around 1846. The fine, steel engraved maps characterized the more austere, functional approach that was becoming increasingly typical of Victorian cartographers, who generally rejected the more decorative styles of earlier mapmakers such as the likes of John Speed, Emanuel Bowen Thomas Kichin.
Perhaps this veer away from the decorative suggests the idea that Archer's maps were designed to be used, as opposed to merely studied. Their content includes communications: canals, railways and coach routes. This beautiful hand colored map of Syria stands apart from his more ubiquitous maps of the English countryside. It is larger than his norm, more decorative, and utilitarian. The hand colored map is approx. 10x12 inches, in a glass fronted frame approx. 14.5x17 inches.
