Description
Charming miniature map covering the northern part of Asia. Korea is depicted as a long peninsula protected by the kingdom of China and the Great Wall. The map was engraved by the brothers Ambrose and Ferdinand Arsenius who had been assistants to Frans Hogenburg and co-engravers of Ortelius' folio Theatrum. The maps were copied from Philip Galle's 1598 edition of the Epitome and were considered superior to Galle's maps. This series of maps was accompanied by text by Michel Coignet and was published in Antwerp by Jan van Keerbergen. Verso Text: Latin
Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598) was a Flemish cartographer & geographer, celebrated as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). Ortelius' work, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps; this work can therefore be called the first atlas (although the term was not used until 20 years later by Mercator).
