Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A burnished redware vessel of an intriguing gourd-like shape, the lower body modeled with vertical ribs - perhaps representing the contours of a gourd, though the ribs could also be interpreted as distinct bean-like forms - the corseted upper section leading to a short cylindrical neck and dramatically flared rim, the entire vessel on a rounded base. All is finished with a saturated red vermillion slip that was beautifully burnished. This vessel is a classic case of art imitating life, as the indigenous of Mexico used hollowed gourds for storing and serving food and drink. Size: 10.75" in diameter x 6.75" H (27.3 cm x 17.1 cm)
