Description
**First Time At Auction**
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely carved stone sphinx of a near-miniature scale. The sphinx, a mythical being possessing the head of a human and the body of a lion, is generally associated with protecting royal tombs and religious temples, this association stemming from the Greek form that guarded the entrance to Thebes, only allowing those who could solve the infamous riddle to pass. Custom stand. Size: 2.25" H (5.7 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private United Kingdom collection, acquired in the 1980's
