Description
**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fascinating and rare cast bronze applique in the form of a human face with a bear's head and upper body forming the headdress. The bear was a well known animal to the Romans, but rarely portrayed, usually only in relation to the Orsini family. Who did this mask represent? What kind of object did its presence enliven? Size: 1.15" W x 2.25" H (2.9 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.55" H (9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Salter collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
