Description

The Boston Post. Boston: Post Publishing Co., January 6, 1920. 18 x 23 in., 22pp. Featuring the bold headline announcing Babe Ruth being sold to the Yankees.

The paper announcing baseball's most historic transfer, leading to the Curse of the Bambino and the greatest Yankee teams of all time.

Ruth had already established himself as the best left-handed pitcher in the league during 1916 and 1917 seasons, and had just smashed the single-season home run record in 1919 after concentrating on his hitting. He was the biggest star in baseball. For reasons not entirely known, but often rumored to be due to Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee's losses due to an investment in the musical No No, Nannette, he sold his star player to the rival New York Yankees. The $125,000 sale was by far the greatest ever, and the stunned Ruth petitioned for an even higher salary increase that the Yankees accepted. After the trade, the Red Sox went from being one of the top teams in the league to not winning a title for decades, often attributed to "The Curse of the Bambino." Ruth would go on to become arguably the greatest slugger in baseball history, and win four World Series with the Yankees as the star of some of the strongest teams of all time. Some years ago, another Boston title on this event brought $12,000 in a sports auction.

Condition

Wear on the outer margins if the paper with some toning. Holes on the centerfold margin, suggesting it was once part of a bound volume.
