Description
WELLS H. G.: (1866-1946) English Writer of Science Fiction novels. A.L.S., H. G. Wells, on two sides of a printed correspondence card, Hanover Terrace, Regent's Park, 20th July 1940, to 'My dear Lane'. Wells informs his correspondent 'I am constantly recommending people to read Littlepage In Search of Soviet Gold as the most illuminating work about Soviet Russia in existence' and further adds 'Nobody seems able to get a copy. It is a Harrap publication & I think copies are imported. But it is beyond all question an important book & good reading & it ought to be generally accessible'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG Wells presumably writes to Allen Lane (1902-1970) British Publisher and co-founder of Penguin Books in 1935. Lane had previously been managing editor of the Bodley Head following the death of his uncle, John Lane, in 1925. John D. Littlepage's book In Search of Soviet Gold was first published in New York in 1938 and two years later in England. The work is an account of the mining engineer's experiences in the Soviet Union after having been sent there to assist in re-opening mines which had been closed and fallen into disrepair following the Communist revolution.
