Karem River, Papua New Guinea, carved wood shield, the face or mask standing out 1"-2" in relief, the zigzag designs all over quite extensive and dramatic optically, the back with its shield's handle showing age and use, the edges pierced with holes for probable attachment of feathers, the shield quite curved in, or semi-circular, but does not appear to have been made from an old canoe, colored with black, white, and muted red pigments, cracks running down from both sides of the face's temples, 65"h x 11.5"w x 6.5"d. Provenance: from the collection of Maria Manetti Shrem and Jan Shrem, retains old Christie's label.
