Antique original American Schoolgirl Art watercolor on paper painting by Mary Phillips Gardner (1790-1846 Massachusetts). Housed in an eglomise frame titled Sappho inspired by Love, Composes an ode to Venus. Lengthy genealogy on verso describing the descendants. " This picture was painted in water colors (and has never been retouched) by Mary Phillips (Gardner) when 16 years old at Mrs. Saunder's and Miss Beecher's Academy, Dorchester Mass. Our Grandmother Mary Phillips daughter Benj. Phillips and Ann Dow of Lynn Mass. Was born Nov. 11th 1790 Married Dec 29 1817 to James Gardner, Lynn Mass. M.D. Harvard died June 4th 1846..." Mrs. Saunders and Miss Beach's Academy was opened in 1803 and taught the daughters of many prominent New Englanders. The schoolgirl needlework and art are highly collected. Frame and eglomise mat possibly the work of John Doggett. Work window measures 12 1/2" x 10" Frame measures 16 1/2" x 13 1/2". Good condition with crack through center of glass mat. Watercolor with mild toning and fading. Frame with wear, losses and older restorations. In house USA continental shipping $85 plus insurance
