Description
Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan/Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A bichrome pottery sculpture representing a humped and long-horned Zebu bull, its body and horns adorned with a black on cream stripe motif, its expressive face delineated with wide open round eyes and flat nose, with a painted yoke/collar. The humped zebu bull was a recurring theme on the decorative and ritual arts from this civilization, most likely symbolizing the leader of the herd, known for strength and virility. Lucite block stand. Size: 3.25" L x 2.375" W x 3" H (8.3 cm x 6 cm x 7.6 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The Zebu is the domesticated form of the Asian auroch that disappeared and was replaced with the Zebu during the time of the Indus Valley civilization. Artistic representations of humped bulls occur throughout the area, and it has been theorized by the excavators of Harappa that they symbolize the "leader of the herd" - powerful, strong, and virile.
