Description
**First Time At Auction**
Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th century CE. A round pottery ball with a flattened shoulder and projecting, rimmed spout. It was made to be filled with Greek fire, the infamous flammable liquid concoction invented by the Byzantines and kept as a state secret. These early grenades were filled with the potion and flung towards the enemy using seaborne light catapults or, on land, onagers. Although it is probably not from Antioch, this item would undoubtedly be effective against large rabbits (for all you Monty Python fans). Size: 3" W x 3.3" H (7.6 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
