Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. Presenting a balanced composition in egg tempera, gold leaf, gesso, and varnish on linen and wood, a poignant icon depicting the Council of the Archangel Michael. Saint Michael stands at the center of the assembly of saints, bishops, and holy figures, valiantly raising his sword, dressed as the general of heaven's angels and protector of the Church Militant, donning regal vestments in blue and gold with a flowing red cape. Above is a beautiful Mother of God image with Mary gazing upon Christ Emmanuel as he makes a blessing of benediction. Size: 14.25" L x 11.375" W (36.2 cm x 28.9 cm), custom stand not included.
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
