Description
This is a Very rare and desirable example of Ikat textile from Bali, Indonesia. A Superb Geringsing wayang kebo. Field divided into semicircles by three examples of four-pointed stars. In the semicircles are two groups of people, probably representing a priest and a devotee. The borders consist of three rows of star flowers. Black on ecru. hand woven cotton.Collected by a Diplomats wife in the early 1980's. Measures 85 inches long x 19 inches wide. *** Nearly identical in design, age, and condition to geringsing in Art Institute of Chicago, Nr. 2002.985, published in Khan-Majlis, The Art of Indonesian Textiles,and to example in National Gallery of Australia depicted in Maxwell, Sari to Sarong, p. 62-63. Another very similar piece in Khan Majlis, Indonesische Textilien, Wege zu Goettern und Ahnen, Fig. 328. Also a similar piece is displayed in Splendid Symbols, Fig. 110 provides detailed information on imagery.

A few small holes, otherwise in great condition for its age.
