Description
A Fine and rare Chinese Export Calamander Roll Top Desk. Late 18th/Early 19th Century. Sold through Sotheby's October 2003 sale for a price of $39,000. Dimensions: 43.5 x 41.5 x 22 inches. This desk is virtually identical to a design published by George Hepplewhite in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide in July 2, 1787, pl. 68, a Tambour Table. As in the design, the writing slide is fitted with an adjustable easel attachment. Illustrations from the most current sources were provided to Chinese craftsmen to produce commissions from Western patrons; Chinese characters are painted on the interior drawer bottoms. The offered lot appears to be the only known example of its type.
