This is a complete set of four first editions, noted as 'the first edition after the printing of 525 deluxe copies", published by Harcourt, Brace in 1939, of Carl Sandburg's biography, "Abraham Lincoln The War Years". These are in their original slipcase, which is heavily worn, with large parts of the surface material, including text, removed. It is structurally usable. The books themselves are in good condition, but they've been in storage, and have a musty smell. The covers, dark blue backgrounds with gold lettering, are unfaded. There are surface scuffs but no notable stains, and no tears. The spines are straight and the lettering clearly legible. There are no signs of mildew or like damage. There is foxing to a number of end pages and page edges, with some of that extending into the page face borders, but not into the text of the body copy. Most page faces are not foxed. There are no other significant stains. The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are few tears, all shallow, and only one notable crease, to a single leaf that was folded poorly, with no material loss. There are no stamps or other attachments. I believe there is no writing. The text and the many illustrations are unfaded and clearly legible.
