Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1300 CE. An anthropomorphic stone idol, hand carved from and string cut from a mottled grey-green stone with black inclusions, depicting a standing or kneeling figure with diagonally crossed arms with a dramatic facial expression. Whether this piece represents a deity, leader, or metaphorical representative of humankind is unknown. What we do know is that its minimalist aesthetic inspired early modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse, and it continues to appeal to our 21st century sensibility. What's more the anthropomorphic subject matter is universal. Size: 1.75" W x 3.625" H (4.4 cm x 9.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
