Item Details
Description
Native American, Northern Plains, possibly Crow, ca. early 20th century CE. A shield made of stretched deer hide with a schematic depiction of a standing deer with antlers and bold zigzags emanating from its forehead. To the indigenous of North America, the deer was believed to be a messenger as well as a creature known for its gentleness, intuition, and sensitivity. Above and below are two pairs of petite filled canvas medicine sacks tied with sinew, bordered by painted brown and cream hued running triangular motifs. A long strap is attached for wearing and/or suspension. Size: 22.25" L x 21" W (56.5 cm x 53.3 cm); strap measures 36" L (91.4 cm)
