Description
1796 Works Jean Racine French Tragedy Thebaide Phedre Boisjermain Commentary 7v
“A tragedy need not have blood and death; it's enough that it all be filled with that majestic sadness that is the pleasure of tragedy.” ― Jean Racine
A rare, early edition of the works of French writer Jean Racine. Racine was known as of the most important French dramatist from the 17th-century alongside Moliere and Corneille. This set includes some of the most important and popular works by Racine including ‘Thebaide’, ‘Alexander the Great’, ‘Phedre’ and ‘Esther.’ In addition to the popular tragedies, this set is illustrated with fine full-page engravings.
This fine seven-volume set includes commentaries by Luneau de Boisjermain, which was originally published in 1768. The original edition of Boisjermain’s commentaries was important in that he sold it himself, rather than going through booksellers. He was sued and his work was seized because he did not go through the proper channels of selling this immensely popular work.
