Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. Finely delineated in oil paint and gold leaf on heavy gauge tin on wood, a striking retablo depicting the winged Archangel Michael, valiant champion of the Army of God who fights the forces of evil, donning regal vestments, and holding a dark figure, symbolizing the malevolent. The composition is framed in a stunning carved and gilded wood frame with mirror inlays that shows nice signs of age and may be of the same period, a wonderful work of art in its own right. Size: 12.75" L x 11" W (32.4 cm x 27.9 cm)
