Chinese Han Dynasty Polychrome Barrel Amphora
Item Details
Description
China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A distinctive, cylinder-shaped ceramic vessel, sometimes called a barrel amphora, that would have held offerings or ashes in a tomb. The body of the vessel tapers slightly at the base, which is flat and, like the lower body, painted black. This black ring is mirrored at the top of the vessel, which has a nearly flat shoulder. A red ring circles the upper shoulder and neck, with the color still vibrant. Black again delineates the rolled rim and mouth. The majority of the body is white with some other colors and deposits over it; this area was probably once painted with a scene of some kind. This amount of pigment remaining is a real rarity! Size: 3.85" W x 7.4" H (9.8 cm x 18.8 cm)

Provenance: private English collection
