Item Details
Description
Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Inkwell, possibly Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, cylindrical form with tapered top, central spout, and five quill holes, decorated with cobalt covering the top and shoulder. We have seen one inkwell of similar form with raised top and spout bearing a Clarkson Crolius, Sr. maker's mark, suggesting this example was made at his pottery. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Two small chips to interior of spout and a faint 1/2" line on top of spout. A few small base chips. Minor in-the-firing clay residue to surface. A 3" V-shaped line on underside. An approximately 3 1/4" horizontal Y-shaped line on side of inkwell, extending a short distance onto underside. H 2" ; Diameter 3 1/2".
