The etching is a group portrait of all the performers who played a role in President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 inaugural, including Alfred Hitchcock, Julie Andrews, Carol Channing, Elaine May, Mike Nichols, a very young Woody Allen, Harry Belafonte, Barbra Streisand, Carol Burnett, Ann-Margret, and Johnny Carson, with Margot Fonteyn onstage and Gala Director Richard Adler on the phone.
NOTE/PROVENANCE: this piece was given directly to the consignor by Hirschfeld's printer Emiliano Sorini, (b. Italy, 1931, died NJ, 1999), cited in the 2015 "The Hirschfeld Century: Portrait of an Artist and His Age" as "master intaglio printer Emiliano Sorini..." Sorini was also the printer for Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Jack Levine, and Keith Haring. The consignor was a student of Sorini who presented her with the proof as a gift.
