  • Title/Content of Map: 'Lusatia Superior' Upper Lusatia (German: Oberlausitz, Czech: Horní Luice, Polish: Górne uyce or Milsko) is a historical region straddling Germany and Poland. Its historic capital is Bautzen/Budyin (marked on the map as Pautze & Budissin), while the largest city in the region is Görlitz/Zgorzelec (marked on the map in red, towards the centre-right of the map). The area shown by the map straddles present-day Saxony, southwestern Poland & the Czech Republic. Other towns including Zittau, Löbau (marked as Liebau), Pirna (Pirnaw) Zawidów (Seidenberg) & Dresden are marked. Relief and forests are shown pictorially.The title cartouche at bottom left shows a dog and an orrery. Uncoloured coat of arms top left, and scale bottom right. This map is folding hence the centrefold line may show on the image below
  • Date Printed: c1730
  • Image Size: Approx 41.5 x 52.5cm, 16.25 x 20.75 inches (Large); Please note that this is a folding map.
  • Type: Attractive engraved antique map of the region with original hand colour
  • Condition: Good; suitable for framing. There is a light water stain at the top of the map along the fold straddling the border - see image.
  • Verso: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain
  • Folding: This is a folding map.
  • Artist/Cartographer/Engraver: Homann/Homann heirs, based on earlier maps. The original cartographer is indicated to be Bartholomeus Scultetus (1540-1614),active in Goerlitz. The map is very similar to Hondius' 1645 map of the same title, although Homann has added significantly to the number of towns and villages marked on the map. Homann was well known for copying and enhancing earlier maps, often without attribution.
  • Provenance: Published by the firm of Homann Erban in Nuremburg, c.1730
