Hollow Cut Silhouette Silk Young Woman in Eglomise

Item Details

Description

A hollow-cut silhouette of an attractive young woman in a gold leaf frame with eglomise decoration on the glass. The woman has a large bow in her hair and is wearing a frilly collar. The black backing is silk. Sight size of the silhouette is 3 ¼” x 4” and the overall frame size is 4 ¾” x 5 1/8”.

Condition

Condition f the silhouette is very fine: there are no rips or tears in the paper, and no staining, just overall toning that one would expect. The frame, which in itself is a little gem, shows only minor edge bumping. I have not taken the silhouette out of the frame (for fear of not getting it back in properly), so I do not know if the woman is identified, or the piece is dated. It appears to be c. 1830, perhaps a bit earlier.
