Description
SILK-EMBROIDERED LINEN SHELF DOILIES, LOT OF TWO, rectangular, in two sizes, made on bolting cloth, with hand-written note from maker describing their history and manufacture, signed "Aurelia Fox Hamilton". Most late 19th/early 20th century. 19" x 14 1/2", and 11" x 7".
Larger example very good, with only a short section of separation in one corner, smaller example with loss to silk ribbon, and some fraying.
Provenance: From a Staunton, VA estate collection.
Catalogue Note: The accompanying note from Mrs. Hamilton describes these pieces as being made on bolting cloth from the Barrows grist-mill, which "Mr. H", presumably her husband who worked as book keeper at the grist-mill, would bring home to her when the mill's bolting cloth had to be changed.
