Description
CANADIAN DATED LINEN PLAIN-WEAVE HAND TOWEL / SHOW TOWEL, embroidered, rectangular form, having applied fringe at top in a swag design with including initials "EM" and stars between the swags, initials "JM" and date "1834" with large star designs and central floral motif below, applied fringe at base. Likely Pennsylvania. Dated 1834. 59" x 18 1/4" OA.
Very good condition overall with fading to red embroidery and minor scattered stains.
Provenance: From the Allentown Art Museum to benefit future acquisitions for the Museum's textile collection.
Catalogue Note: Familial connections largely between the Mennonites in Pennsylvania and Canada probably accounts for the transmission of the hand towel/show towel form.
