Description

AMERICAN LINEN PLAIN-WEAVE HAND TOWEL / SHOW TOWEL, with cotton cross-stitch embroidery, crocheted cotton, fringe and linen lace, rectangular, two panels joined by crocheted lace insert, the larger panel having narrow rolled hems on the each side with selvage edges to top and bottom, and crocheted lace edging along the top, the smaller panel with plain self-fringe, selvage edge to right, and narrow rolled hem to left; lower panel having central flowering tulip and starflower plant design, flanked by two small floral plants, geometric border runs across panel just below the design and above the fringe. Likely Pennsylvania. First half 19th century. 51 1/4" x 16 3/4" OA.
Excellent condition overall with some uneven toning.
Provenance: From the Allentown Art Museum to benefit future acquisitions for the Museum's textile collection.
