Description
Europe, France, likely Lyon, ca. early 17th century CE. A cast bronze apothecary's mortar with a wide, conical body on a round, flat base with lead inside of it. The exterior body of the mortar has six caryatids interspersed at regular intervals with six winged cherub busts. Around the exterior rim is a register of flowers in relief. The interior is undecorated. The piece is very heavy because of the lead, and in the interior base, the bronze has worn away from use to reveal the lead. This was an essential tool used by the precursor to modern doctors and pharmacists. Size: 5.05" W x 3.1" H (12.8 cm x 7.9 cm)
