Gorham 1874 Sterling Enamel Medallions Charger
Gorham 1874 Sterling Enamel Medallions Charger
Item Details
Description
A large sterling silver display charger made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1874. The cut and applied silver lettering reads 'Welcome Coming Speed Parting' referring to a quote from Alexander Pope's translation of Homer's Odyssey, "True friendship's laws are by this rule expressed, 'Welcome the coming, speed the parting, guest.'" The engraved center illustration is a naval scene from the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century in which the guests, or the Normans in this case, never left. Four hand made enamel patera medallions provide additional decorative elements. On the back of the charger is a presentation engraving which reads: "WN to JMN, April 12th, 1878." The charger is 12 3/8 inches in diameter x 3/4 high. It weighs 26.4 troy ounces.

Gorham Silver was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, in partnership with Henry Webster, in Providence, Rhode Island. Originally a manufacturer of coin-silver flatware, the company began focusing on sterling silver in 1868, producing everything from flatware such as knives, forks, and spoons to hollowware pieces ranging from coffee pots to serving bowls. Gorham even created signature show pieces in the Martele style, most famously a silver dressing table and cushioned stool, which beat Tiffany in the silver furniture category at the 1900 Paris World Fair.
