This is an incredible sterling silver Victorian-era picture frame from Iran, circa 1890.; This piece features some incredible details and showcases a masterful level of craftsmanship. Around the rim of the frame is a thin engine-turned pattern.; Engine-turning, or guilloche, is a hallmark design of Victorian-era silver and jewelry. Engine-turning machines were developed in the 18th Century. These machines are very hard to come by as they are no longer in production. Today, engine-turning is carried out by a small number of highly skilled craftspeople.; This beautiful antique, remarkably, contains all of its original parts! Due to the age of the piece the original glass does have some minor chips, however, these are hidden when the glass is inside the frame. The original blue velvet backing still has its color and will hold the image of your choice securely. This piece also has a space in the back to hang on the wall if you so choose. The top of the frame has lovely open-work details. The left side of the detailing is a little less pronounced than the right, however this is to be expected with the age of the piece.; The frame is approximately 5 1/2” tall and has a diameter of 4”. This piece is the perfect size to sit on any nightstand, vanity, or desk. This piece is marked in two places. One of the maker’s marks is hidden in the design atop the frame and the other is on the right foot of the frame. Although I cannot translate the marks, it is certainly Farsi. I have acid-tested this piece as sterling silver. The silver frame weighs approximately 55.00 grams or 1.76 troy ounces.; This piece would make a beautiful, sentimental gift or a fabulous addition to your antique silver collection!
