1889, published in Calcutta. This is a second edition copy of Rudyard Kipling's second book published in 1888. "Plain Tales from the Hills" is Kipling's first volume of fiction. Most of the stories it includes had already appeared in the "Civil and Military Gazette; " they were written before he reached the age of 22; and they show a remarkably precocious literary talent. His vignettes of life in British India during the peak years of the empire give vivid insight into Anglo-India at work, at play, its military life, and into the 'character' of India itself. Approx. 5.5x7.5 inches.
