Description
180bhp, 265 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, single four-barrel carburetor, three-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 115"
In 1955, Chevrolet released its new, reliable and powerful small-block V8 engine, and in so doing created what would become an automotive legend. The V8-powered Bel Air provided significant value for the $3,170 base price, and revolutionized the 'low-price' market space. An immediate success, the Bel Air became the best-selling American car of 1955, with nearly 771,000 examples produced.
The Bel Air Convertible accounted for just over five percent of total Bel Air production in 1955, and remains one of the most desirable Chevrolet models of all time. This very fine example displays a show-quality turquoise and white exterior finish, along with equally impressive brightwork. The Bel Air has been fitted with a white convertible top with a matching boot, along with wide whitewall tires with full chrome hubcaps. In addition, the car is fitted with bumper guards, a Continental kit, and a spotlight.
The interior, featuring turquoise and white upholstery, appears like new, as does the blue carpeting. The restored dash, also finished in turquoise is very nice, and while the original steering wheel does exhibit some imperfections, the interior overall is presented in an impressive, period correct condition. Optional amenities include an AM radio, a clock, and a heater/defroster.
Underhood, the restored engine bay reveals the optional 'power-pack' V8, which utilizes a single four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts, mated to a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. The engine bay and undercarriage were both completely restored to period correct standards, and while there is evidence of some road use, they remain quite impressive.
This well equipped and beautiful Bel Air Convertible remains an impressive example of the landmark Chevrolet models of 1955, and will continue to provide a fine addition to any enthusiast's collection.
