1940 LaSalle Series 52 Convertible Coupe
1940 LaSalle Series 52 Convertible Coupe
Item Details
Description
125hp, 322 cu. in. L-Head, V8 engine, Carter dual-barrel carburetor, three-speed synchromesh manual transmission, independent front with coil springs and semi-floating rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 123"

In LaSalle's last year of production there were two different series of cars, which included the four all-new premium 52-Series models. These sleekly-styled Series 52 LaSalle Specials utilized GM's new 'torpedo' style body that was shared with the Cadillac 62-Series. A Series 52 model was also lower and wider than the standard 50-Series models and was devoid of any chrome side trim which added to its sleeker, smoother appearance.

The LaSalle Series 52 Special Convertible Coupe presented here appears to have been restored twice. The condition of the car suggests that it was treated to a ground up restoration some time ago and a cosmetic freshening much more recently. Very new, its virtually flawless blue metallic paintwork is beyond reproach and its gleaming chrome shows only minor signs of careful polishing.

The interior of the car appears to have been from an earlier restoration. The carefully preserved blue and yellow leather interior is augmented by a still beautifully refinished dashboard. For comfort and convenience LaSalle appointments include a heater, defroster, clock and radio.

Although the engine is not original, it is correct to the vintage and has been well maintained. The detailing at the time of the restoration was to show quality and it remains in very good condition as does the entire undercarriage.

LaSalle enthusiasts feel the 1940 cars, particularly the Series 52 models, were the best-looking LaSalles ever built. Added equipment such as dual Guide fog lamps, bumper guards, wide whitewall tires, contrasting tan cloth top, radio and antenna, and twin side mirrors only add to this example's high style. The LaSalle Series 52 Special Convertible Coupe was added to the lineup midway through the 1940 model year. A mere 425 LaSalle Series 52 Special Convertible Coupe models were produced making this a very rare and desirable addition to any classic car collection.
