Lot 124 Frank Frazetta

[removed]

[removed]Lot 124 Frank Frazetta, "The Monsters from the Mists!", 7 pages from Thun'da #1, 1952, 18 1/2"x13". In 1952, the young, wildly talented Frank Frazetta was 24 years old and ready to show the world of comics what he could do. He was assigned to do a comic book named Thun'da. It was, of course, a Tarzan-like situation. A modern man finds himself in a strange new jungle. Will he survive? Will he become the King of the Jungle? The young, virile artist would prefer playing baseball all day long, but soon his growing responsibilities pushed him into a need to hit a home run with his first real comic book story, one that he could do as he pleased. He put his heart and soul into the four stories in Thun'da #1, and it announced to the world of comic book readers and publisher that Frazetta is here now. These are the stories that made the world sit up and take notice. Of the four Thun'da stories in existence, all owned by members of Frank and Ellie's family, the one being auctioned here is perhaps the nicest of the four. It contains all the elements of Frazetta's emerging genius: primitive, ape-like "cave men", wooly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers, dense jungle foliage with moss-covered gnarled limbs and logs. His uncanny ability to draw perfect…absolutely perfect!...human figures is never stronger than in this story. There are 43 panels in this story, which was the second story in the comic book. The first story set up the scene, where Roger Drum falls into this prehistoric world and becomes Thun'da, the King of the Jungle. In the first panel, which is a huge 12" x 12.5", the large scene of Thun'da facing the wooly mammoth is a precursor to the illustrations he did several years later for the Canaveral Press books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Many of these Canaveral illustrations have sold for $50,000 and up.  LARGE IMAGES BELOW

Panels 2 and 3 use the full width of the page (12.75" wide). As illustrations, these two panels are comparable in size, quality, and value to a $15,000 illustration. The next six panels show six tight and completely finished and polished drawings of Frazetta's figure studies. The bottom tier of page 2 is a good example of this. If these were smaller Frazetta illustrations, similar to the Ace frontispieces, their value would certainly be in the range of $5000 each. Therefore, I think this is a good argument for a value of at least $40,000 for the first page and at least $30,000 for page two. And so on. Look at page 4, panel 2: You won't find a nicer panel than this because it doesn't exist. It is all Frazetta: the layout, the penciling, the inking. It was, and is, his tour de force in comic books. Page 6 contains more very sweet and solid figure drawings, and panel 6, where Thun'da is running along a horizontal limb with his best girl on his back is simply a jewel. If one assigns a value of $40,000 for the splash page and $30,000 for the other six pages, that adds up to $220,000 for the complete 7 page story. Several of Frazetta's Famous Funnies covers have sold for $150,000 each. The Canaveral illustrations of 1962 have sold at prices ranging from $30,000 to over $50,000. Yet the reserve on this story is only $100,000. If this story sells for less than $200,000, someone got a great deal on the single greatest Frazetta comic book story. This is the rarest of the rare, and I predict that when all four of the Thun'da stories are released on the market, the price of this first story will look like a bargain. For this very special item, the bidding will open at $100,000 and progress in $5000 increments.
