Description
1859 Works of Francois Rabelais Illustrated Gustave Dore Gargantua Pantagruel
“Seeing how sorrow eats you, defeats you.I'd rather write about laughing than crying,For laughter makes men human, and courageous.” ― François Rabelais, Gargantua and Pantagruel
François Rabelais was an early 16th-century French writer. He is often considered one of the earliest fantasy writers and, because of his monumental work ‘Gargantua and Pantagruel’, he helped establish the modern European literary style. According to Merriam-Webster, the world ‘rabelaisian’ has been coined as something that is "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature, or bold naturalism." (MW, Rabelaisian).
This 19th-century printing includes both volumes of his works, edited by Pierre Dupont, illustrated by the famous illustrator Gustave Dore.
