Description
A large and ornately decorated Ironstone Presentation Jug for Senator Martin Wyckoff, Warren County New Jersey. The jug dates c. 1890 and there is a faint inscription on the base (“U Pottery”); I believe it to have been made by one of the Trenton on North Jersey Potteries that flourished at the end of the 19th century. The jug has the presentation information, in gold, under the spout: “Senator Martin Wyckoff, Warren County.” There are 2 round panels, one on either side, decorated with landscape scenes (a lake scene and a church in the snow), a molded handle, covered spout and the top of the jug includes molded scallop shells, highlighted in gold. All of this against a bright magenta glaze. Very heavy, the jug weighs about 5 pounds by itself (shipping weight will be 8 pounds). It stands 10” tall and the handle to spout distance is about 10 ¼”. Martin Wyckoff (1834-1914) was born near White House, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He studied law at Rutgers College, graduating in 1855. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Wyckoff assisted in the raising of a company of the Third New Jersey Volunteers in which he served as a lieutenant. In 1862, he enlisted in the 31st New Jersey Volunteers as an adjutant and later attained the rank of captain. After the war, Wyckoff continued his legal practice in Asbury, Warren County, and represented Warren County, New Jersey, in the state's Senate from 1888 to 1890. My assumption is that this pitcher was presented to him after his retirement from the New Jersey State Senate.

The jug is in very fine condition: no chips, cracks, lines, restoration, etc. The magenta color is very strong and the gold highlighting and lettering shows only the slightest amount of rubbing.
