Description
An exquisite and rare jar of the “Last Emperor”. The jar has an elegant shape and is covered with bright coral red glaze with two large gold enamel bordered medallions. One medallion contains an artistically painted spring scene: two long tailed birds with red, blue, orange and black feather vividly perching on a fully blossoming plum tree, which has a few bright green leaves, announcing the arrival of the spring. The painting is attributable to Chen Yi Ting, a master painter of birds and member of “Zhu Shan Ba Yiu” (the 8 friends of Zhu Hill) of early republic period. The other medallion contains the scene of snowing day in a village, a scholar in blue dress riding a dark donkey with an attendant in very thick coat following on foot. The sky is grey with falling snow; the trees are thickly coated with accumulating snow; the long path is covered with white snow; the roof of the houses and the patios are covered by white snow too; the doors and windows are close to keep heat in. The setting is artistic and grand, and the painting is meticulously detailed. This painting is attributable to He Xu Len, a master painter of snowing scene and a member of “Zhu Shan Ba Yiu”. The cover is decorated with two chrysanthemums in gold enamel. The outer base has the imperial mark of the last emperor of China, Emperor Hong Xian (General Yuan Shi Kai, 1916 AD). Since his empire lasted only 80 days, his porcelain is very rare and highly valued. (Dr. Robert I-San Lin Collection 4431, brought to California in 1960s). 5.25"x5"
