Antonio Genovesi and Nicola Capozzi, Artis Logicocriticae Epitome, manuscript in Latin, on paper [Italy (probably Naples), eighteenth century] 61 leaves (plus 3 endleaves at front and 2 at back), complete, single column of 28 lines in a good and legible bookhand, titles and book numbers in capitals, one table of syllogisms, two or three marginal notes else very clean margins, a few smudges and spots, some slight shine-through of ink (but without serious effect), else good condition, 198 by 150mm. stitched together at spine, but boards missing, in marbled card slipcase This is most probably a clean copy of notes made by Nicola Capozzi on lectures on logic by Antonio Genovesi. The latter was an important and well known writer, philosopher and economist who worked in Naples in the second half of the eighteenth century. The three books here discuss the concept of logic, a definition of the ars cogitandi seu philosophandi , the nature of the human soul, ideas and statements, the distinction between truth and falsehood and between faith and science, the capacity of humans to assess the divine, and finally the correct use of reason, the method of analysis and syllogisms.
