19th century Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stylized slip-trailed floral design accented with dotted trails. 11"x11"x19". Weight 21 pds. The New York Stoneware Company was in production in Fort Edward, New York from 1859-1885. Fort Edward in the upper Hudson Valley was one of the nation's major centers of stoneware manufacture in the latter half of the 19th century. For a number of years three large mechanized stoneware potteries were in operation at Fort Edward, supplying their products to much of the Northeastern United States.
