Description
Grisaille enamel medallion depicting bust of Roman Emperor Vitellius looking right and wearing a wreath of laurels on his head. Bust is surrounded by text "AVL VIT_______VS VIIII. Medallion is oval and measures 3" x 2.25" and is mounted to wood support measuring 5" x 4.25". Work was featured in The Walters Art Gallery Catalogue of the Painted Enamels of the Renaissance published in June, 1967 and is listed on page 389. Medallion is believed to be from the workshop of Jacques Laudin (1586-1681). Medallion from the series "Huit Medaillons Aux Profils D'Empereurs Romains" and exhibits some chipping to edges with loss.
